Build your product price from the costs behind it.

  1. Work out the cost per unit

Include material, machine time, labor, hardware, and packaging. If you sell a set, use the cost of the whole set as one sellable unit. Keep the recorded print time on the same basis.

  2. Set up products and variants

Record the products you sell regularly. Use variants for differences such as color or size, with a SKU, stock quantity, and production cost for each.

  3. Review each sales channel

Enter the selling price, discounts, shipping, and applicable fees. Compare estimated profit and margin before changing a price or listing the product somewhere else.

A higher selling price can still leave less profit.

This desk organizer costs $11.32 to make. A direct sale at $18.87 leaves $7.55 after production cost, assuming no selling fees, discount, shipping, or tax. That is about a 40% margin.

Now consider a $24 listing with a 10% discount, $4 charged for shipping, $4 in shipping costs, and $3 in selling fees. Revenue including shipping is $25.60. After production, shipping, and fees, estimated profit is $7.28, or about 28.4% of that revenue.

The $3 fee is an illustrative total, not a marketplace fee schedule. Use the fees and tax settings that apply to your own channel. These figures describe the sale under the entered assumptions, before business expenses you have not included.

  • Include packaging once in the production cost
  • Apply discounts before comparing profit
  • Keep customer shipping charges separate from shipping costs

Keep product costing separate from customer quoting.

Product costing is useful when you sell the same item repeatedly. Keep its variants, costs, and channel prices available so you can review them as material prices or selling fees change.

For a custom request, prepare a quote for the customer’s quantity and specifications. Once you have an order, use customer records, stock reservations, and payment and shipping updates to keep track of the work.

Questions about product costs and profit.

Production costs, product variants, and sales channel calculations explained.

Ask us a question
What should I include in a 3D printed product’s cost?

Include filament or resin, machine time, electricity, labor, hardware, and packaging. Use the amount needed for one sellable unit. If a unit is a set of 20 pieces, the recorded cost and print time should cover all 20 pieces.

Can I keep different colors or sizes as variants?

Yes. PRO includes products with variants, SKUs, and stock quantities. Separate variants let you identify the item being sold and record differences in its cost or available stock.

How are 3D printing profit margins calculated?

Estimated profit is revenue after discounts, including shipping charged to the customer, minus the production costs, shipping costs, fees, and tax amounts included in the calculation. Margin is that profit divided by revenue. The result is only as complete as the costs and settings you enter.

Can I compare Etsy and direct sale prices?

Yes. Save sales channel details for a product and review their estimated profit. A direct sale and an Etsy listing may have different prices, discounts, and selling costs. Check the applicable fee settings when comparing them.

Does saving an Etsy sales channel sync my Etsy shop?

No. The sales channel records let you compare prices and estimated profit. They do not create listings or automatically import marketplace orders.

What does profit per hour mean?

It divides estimated profit for the sellable unit by its recorded print time in hours. It can help compare how products use printer time. It is not an hourly wage or a measure of your total business profit.

Is product costing included in PRO?

Yes. PRO includes products, variants, stock records, and sales channel calculations alongside your inventory, quotes, customers, and orders. See the plans.
